Lord Balarama is the adi-guru, the original spiritual master. In Chaitanya Lila, Lord Balarama appears as Lord Nityananda, the bestower of mercy to even the most fallen conditioned soul. Therefore His appearance as the son of Rohini and Vasudeva is celebrated by devotees with great jubilation.
On the day of Balarama Purnima, devotees fast till noon. Balarama Purnima also marks the end of Jhulan Yatra and the start of the second month of Chaturmasya. This year, we celebrate Balarama’s Appearance Day on Monday, August 7th.
Balarama is Krsna’s first expansion, a portion of whom is manifested as Sankarsana, who then expands as Pradyumna. In this way so many expansions take place. The Balarama feature is as good as Krsna Himself, the only difference being that Krsna’s bodily hue is blackish and Balarama’s is whitish. Maha-vishnu is actually an expansion of Balarama, who is Kṛṣṇa’s first expansion and, in the Vrndavana pastimes, His brother. In the maha-mantra – Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare—the word “Rāma” refers to Balarama. (Teachings of Lord Caitanya)
In His form as Sesha Naga (Ananta Sesha), He supports unlimited number of universes on His hoods. He constantly glorifies the Supreme Lord with His thousand tongues. Sesha is also called Ananta, or unlimited, because He assists the Personality of Godhead in His unlimited expansions by performing an unlimited variety of services.
Lord Balarama is the mercy incarnation of Lord Sri Krishna. His only mission is to please Krishna by rendering service to Him, whether it is in the creation of the material worlds, maintaining the spiritual world or as His personal paraphernalia. He is described as the protector of the devotees of the Lord. He acts as the spiritual master of all devotees. In the Mundaka Upanisha (3.2.4) it is said: nayam atma bala-hinena labhyo. One cannot attain the goal of life without the mercy of Balarama. He came as Lakshmana with Rama. In this Kali-yuga, He appeared as Nityananda Prabhu, an associate of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and delivered the conditioned souls.
All glories to Lord Balarama !!
